Virtual Drive East on Silver Lake Road, thru Main and onto Grange Hall Rd in Fenton, Michigan

Welcome to Part Six of our video tour "Streets of Fenton." In this segment we will start driving from about where the exit is onto Silver Lake Road from US-23 and head east until the stretch of road turns into Grange Hall Road. Put your sunglasses on and enjoy the ride as we head into the late morning sunrise in Fenton, Michigan.

Travel past the Tim Horton's across the street from Cafe Aroma and Cottage Inn Pizza. Then enjoy the snake turns near where Republic bank used to be and where The State Bank still is. If you look quickly and closely, you'll catch a glimpse of the old grain elevator near the railroad tracks.

This is the way one would go from downtown Fenton to Holly, Michigan. You can even pick up I-75 if you continue east bound along this stretch.

Virtual Drive West on North Road and North on Torrey Road in Fenton, Michigan

We start this leg of our video tour just east of North Road Elementary School at the corner of North Road and North Adelaide heading west. We're now into Part Five of the "Streets of Fenton" video series.

Once we reach MoDoggie's Bar & Grill, we turn right and head north on a long stretch of road paralleling US-23 called Torrey Road. Not far is Georgetown Apartments on the right hand side.

There are a lot of relatively new businesses along this road, and many businesses that have been around Fenton quite a long time, like the Fenton Salvage Yard and Image Projections. Just think, on one street you can pick up a used Chevy carburetor and get a professionally printed "for sale" sign so you can get top dollar selling your extra used car.

One of my favorite parts of this road is "Deadman's Curve" around a cove in Lake Fenton. We call it "Deadman's Curve" for obvious reasons ... it really can be a dangerous stretch of road. Beautiful, but potentially dangerous.

We don't make it quite to Fenton Farm's Golf Course (a wonderful and friendly golf operation on the north side of Fenton) before we hit the orange barrels of construction. And that's where Part Five of our Fenton tour ends. Enjoy!

Virtual Drive North on Silver Lake Parkway in Fenton

This is an exciting stretch of road. Yes, I'm going to sound like an old person for a second ... this was almost completely just a field when I was growing up in Fenton. There, I've said it.

Now, Silver Lake Parkway is one of the most bustling commerce areas in Fenton. The beginning stretch of this video below actually starts on Owen Road in front of Fenton High School. This is the area we refer to as "Fast Food Alley." There are now too many businesses along this stretch of road to name them all ... but maybe I'll try to name just a few.

I'm not going to even attempt to list all of the banks and credit unions now located in this part of Fenton ... those living here know how many there are, and the number may suprise those who reside elsewhere. It's a lot.

The original VG's in Fenton used to be located about where this video tour starts, but is now located on the east side of Silver Lake Parkway. Gas stations abound near this convenient entrance/exit point for US-23. Walmart, Little Professor Bookstore, the UPS Store, another car dealership, EB Games, Applebee's, Michael's, Dairy Queen, Buffalo Wild Wings, Home Depot, Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, Classic Pizza, K-mart and Glicks. If you have other favorite vendors on this segment of Fenton, please feel free to mention them in the comments section of this article.

This is part four of the "Streets of Fenton" video tour available exclusively on FentonSays.com. The previous three segments include:

North on Adelaide West on Silver Lake Road
South on Leroy Street
West on Shiawassee

Eichelberg Farm - Voted BEST CORN by FentonSays

Now don't get me wrong. I've always enjoyed a good piece of corn. But until I tried Eichelberg's corn for the first time not quite a decade ago, corn was always a nice side dish. Now, with the best tasting corn on the cob known to mankind, it has become a main dish in our home in the summer.

Eichelberg Farm is located on Linden Road north of Fenton. As you are going north on Linden Road past Thompson, it will be a little ways up on your left (west) hand side. Look for the distinctive red sign which can be seen in the video presentation below.

They do have other kinds of fresh produce available to buy. But it is the corn that keeps us coming back time and time again. The tomatoes looked big and ripe and fresh and tasty. We did eat some of the cantaloupe and it was incredible. Go for the corn, but don't hesitate to round out your purchase with these other fresh items. You won't be disappointed.

The inside scoop when I was there just a couple of days ago is that the peak season corn should be available today!! Don't go on a Saturday, however, or you will be disappointed to discover that Saturday is the one day a week in which Eichelberg Farm is closed to the public.

I challenge you to find a better eating piece of sweet corn! If you know of one, please post about it in the comments section or over in the Fenton Forms section of FentonSays.com and we'll go from there. But until then, as far as we are concerned, Eichelberg's corn is the best on the planet!

Virtual Drive Westbound on Shiawassee Avenue in Fenton, MI

Our journey through the main streets of Fenton, Michigan continues. From the heart of Dibbleville to the Fenton Highschool campus, this two and one half minute drive is another trip down memory lane.

This footage was shot on July 17, 2007, days after the stretch of Leroy Street in Fenton was captured for the FentonSays.com reader base. The sunshine turns to rain as we hang a right hand turn at the three way stop just outside of Sweet Variations in Dibbleville.

Past the French Laundry and the park, we want to stop at the Penalty Box for a bite and a beer but we continue on through passing several car lots. We're reminded that Wendy's closed without warning about last Christmas time. And before we reach the stretch of road housing many fast food joints, our journey ends. Stay tuned for further adventures through the streets of Fenton, Michigan.

Fenton Michigan's 1937 Triple Murder

The following is an exerpt from the book "The Village Players" republished with permission from the Fenton author, Robert G. Harris. If you would like to purchase the complete 307 paged book, with over 60 photos, you can find it at the Lil Professor Book Store in Fenton, Michigan. This book is a narrative history of the Village of Fenton, 1937-1941.

Fenton's Triple Murder

The town’s people had by and large recovered from the bank robbery in February, 1937…a real rarity for Fenton…when the news of a much more tragic event hit them head on! It was the most shocking crime ever committed in Fenton and at the time the most brutal in this section of the state.

Dr. C. H. White was making a house call on Mrs. Eleanor Davis at her farm home on State Road, just south of the county line. When no one appeared to answer his call, he returned to Fenton to the home of Mrs. Davis’ son, Jay Davis. Accompanied by Mrs. Jay Davis, they returned to the farmhouse, where Mrs. Jay Davis found entry to the house through an unlocked window. After entering the house she discovered the dead body of her father-in-law, Jehiel Davis lying on a bed. Eleanor Davis and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lydia Hilderbrandt, who had been visiting her, were not to be found in the house. They immediately called for help.

When the officers from Livingston County and Fenton arrived, they conducted a search of all the farm buildings and found both women in the barn. They had been stuffed into a grain box, which had the top nailed shut. Mrs. Hilderbrandt was dead, but Eleanor Davis was still living. Mrs. Davis was rushed to Hurley Hospital in Flint, Michigan where she died four days later.

In reconstructing the crime, it appeared as if Ray Larsen, a farm hand employed by the Davises, had lured the two women to the barn where they were attacked and thrown into the grain box. Larsen then returned to the house where he murdered Mr. Davis. After killing Mr. Davis, he took his clothes and all the cash in the house and escaped in the Davis’ Ford truck. Later that night, the truck was found abandoned in Flint, Michigan, but Ray Larsen had disappeared and was never captured.

In just a few months the people of Fenton had experienced four horrific events…an accidental drowning, a bank robbery, the death of a young boy and, worst of all, a brutal triple murder …things like that “just didn’t happen in our town”. Some folks were wondering, “What’s going to happen next”? In spite of these tragic events life went on as usual for most of the villagers

Lake Fenton: Pontoon Tie-Ups and Police

All looked peaceful on this 4th of July out on Lake Fenton. And the county sheriff department wanted it to stay that way. With as many as a half a dozen patrol cars and a transport van, the men in brown (not your UPS delivery guys) hung out with boaters tied up at Eagle Point, keeping the peace all day long.

Seen here on the left side of the photo under the tiki-hut bar on the far end of the peninsula near the south end of Lake Fenton, officers of the law stay cool in the shade. This area of the lake has been growing in popularity for people to tie up and enjoy all that Lake Fenton has to offer since the breaking up of "Pig Beach" on the north end of the lake.

Between the hours of 1:00 PM and 8:00 PM, police deputies arrested four women for public nudity and a man for drinking. Three others were ticketed for various offenses. "We had our van, our paddy wagon, parked on the road nearby," Genesee County Sheriff Robert J. Pickell said about how the department handled those arrested from the boats. "Then we took them to jail."

2007 Fenton Freedom Festival Parade

The reception at the Fenton Hotel on July 3rd to honor the Durant Family as the 2007 Fenton Freedom Festival Grand Marshals had a very nice turn out. There were plenty of delicious hors d'oeuvres provided free of charge to the public by the Fenton Hotel. The presentations, declarations and anecdotal Durant family stories highlighted the evening. Jan Rynearson honored and remembered Mary Alice Durant, who passed away in 2006. Pat Lockwood said that this was one of the most enjoyable Fenton Freedom Festival Receptions to date.

Rain washed the early morning in Fenton, Michigan on the 4th of July this year. A fine mist of occasional rain kept the crowds cool in the mild temperatures during the parade. The Hall family of Hall Chrysler in Fenton provided the silver convertible Seabring as the Grand Marshals' car. Driving the Grand Marshals, Ray Durant, Dave Durant and Todd Durant, is Bob Harris who is one of Uncle Ray's real life nephews.

For as bad as the weather forecast was for Fenton on the 4th of July, the day turned out to be quite nice. Rain didn't ruin the parade, and by the late afternoon the sun was seen peaking out over Lake Fenton. Temperatures warmed up into the high 70's, possibly low 80's, before the firework display at Silver Lake Park later that night.

Fenton Freedom Festival Fireworks

Lots of FentonSays.com readers are looking for additional information on tonight's firework display. This year the fireworks will originate from within Silver Lake Park. There will be NO parking allowed within the park, nor along the road outside of the park. In this article, Pat Lockwood, chairwoman of the Freedom Festival since its inception, is attributed as saying that there is plenty of public parking available around the stores across from Silver Lake Park.
