Fenton Tornado: Special "Streets of Fenton" Video Tour - Dibbleville Tornado

This is the first footage we took right after the storm and tornadoes blew through town. Many of the downed power lines were already being sectioned off and traffic being re-routed, however we somehow managed to work our way northbound through Dibbleville into downtown Fenton, Michigan. We started to catch quick video clips here and there when the magnitude of the devastation started to become apparent.

This two minute and ten second video is a clip montage of the first part of the aftermath of the Fenton tornadoes of 2007. This footage was taken roughly after 6:00 p.m. on the evening of August 24, 2007.

The Sounds of Chainsaws After Tornado Hits

On August 24th, 2007 the small town of Fenton, MI was pummelled by a tornado. Some residents near the north end of town kept power, however much of Fenton spent the first and most of the second nights in darkness. No major injuries have been reported thus far, which is amazing. Especially given the extensive property damage taken from falling trees and power lines. Here is some video footage of the damage:

The Rogue Blades at the Michigan Renaissance Festival

Throughout the fifteen acre village are a smattering of fun, interactive and hilarious plays. We wouldn't recommend bringing your children to the Dead Bob Show. But if you don't have your kiddies in tow, and you don't mind some adult oriented comedy, catch the Dead Bob show if you can. In the years that we have been going to the Renaissance Festival, this has been a standing room only show.

To give you a flavor of the atmosphere around these various plays and shows, we'd like to present a short, two minute video clip of The Rogue Blades. Click on the picture below a couple of times to get the video started. Enjoy!

2007 Michigan Renaissance Festival

It is that time of year. Time to teleport back to the 16th century with a short drive to Holly, Michigan. The Renaissance Festival is being held every weekend through the end of September. Grab a turkey leg, a tall glass of ale and enjoy the shows.

The Michigan Renaissance Festival is located on Dixie Highway between Pontiac and Flint, not far from the Grand Blanc exit 106 off of I-75. Parking is FREE!

Ticket prices: $17.95 for adults, $8.95 for children 5-12 and you can bring children ages 4 and younger in for FREE! Discount tickets are available at Kroger's, Wendy's and ClicknPrint (we used to get ours at VG's and we're not sure why they may not be offering this service any longer. And of course, the Wendy's in Fenton closed down the beginning of this year).

Here is the official web site for the Michigan Renaissance Festival ... click here.
And they may offer discount tickets on their site as well.

The festival is bustling with activity all throughout the 15-acre village. 195 merchants can be found selling authentic renaissance period merchandise. Feel free to dress up in period clothing yourself as audience participation is encouraged.

If you've never been to the Renaissance Festival, it really is a once per year treat. Here's an excellent five minute video presentation we found posted at YouTube which really captures a glimpse of the experience. Enjoy!

Virtual Video Tour "The Eats of Fenton" Burger Battle #05 -- Lucky's Steak House

Lucky's Steak House is located in the Silver Lake Parkway area of Fenton. They have some amazing, and quite filling, loaded cheese fries. The bread they bring to the table is absolutely wonderful. Their steaks may be a touch over-seasoned for some, but for most they are cooked to perfection.

Lucky's Steak House in Fenton, Michigan knows their way around a big, juicy steak but do they know burgers? You bet! This bacon burger with cheddar is mouth watering good. Served up with a pickle and steak fries, this is one heckova lunch meal. You could almost skip the loaf of bread for the table, but we wouldn't recommend it. Fenton is lucky to have a great burger like at Lucky's.

This is entry number five in the FentonSays.com Burger Battle. The featured video tour will give you a flavor for all of the good eats available to residents and visitors of Fenton, Michigan. If you don't agree with our assessment of the various meals to be featured, adding your comments and experiences to the bottom of these articles is greatly appreciated. Fenton's 1937 Donkey Basketball Fund Raiser

The following is an excerpt from the book "The Village Players" republished with permission from the Fenton author, Robert G. Harris. If you would like to purchase the complete 307 paged book, with over 60 photos, you can find it at the Lil Professor Book Store in Fenton, Michigan. This book is a narrative history of the Village of Fenton, 1937-1941.

Note: Picture is not historical, is being displayed for illustrative purposes and is not directly connected to this excerpt.

Local Sports in 1937 Fenton

Guy Simmons, an employee of The Fenton Independent wrote a weekly column for both bowling and softball during their respective seasons. On one occasion, he wrote that “some (most)” of the women bowlers could beat the “gentlemen”. That seemed to be a bold statement for the 1930s, and he undoubtedly heard from many of the men who were bowling.

Womens bowling teams were formed in different ways, probably not much different than the men, except one never heard of men having matches with the “Married vs. Single”! The top women bowlers were: Miss Mary Asman, Virginia Hoskins, Mrs. Mabel Tamlyn, Mrs. Dorothy McBroom, Miss Alice Pasco, Mrs. Alice Butcher, Mrs. Dorothy Craft., Dorothy Long and Verna Hoskins.

On one occasion, some of the “boys” participated in a more physical activity to raise some money for the school athletic program. The businessmen from the “East side” of Leroy Street challenged their counterparts from the “West side” in a Donkey Basketball game to be held the high school gym.

The “boys” representing the West side were Hoyt Glaspie, George Tamlyn, Horace Hitchcock, Herb McKinley, Myron McGlynn, and M. Richmond. All were of early middle age and active businessmen in town. A younger group represented the East side: Bob Hunt, Bob Woodward, Bernard Webber, Francis Marshall, Harold Dode and Bob Beach. The teams mounted twelve Mexican burros and someone threw up a basketball and the game was on! To add to the excitement and entertainment young Charley Case wrestled a brown bear during the half-time intermission.

Virtual Video Tour "The Eats of Fenton" Burger Battle #04 -- The Penalty Box

The Penalty Box on Owen Road in Fenton, Michigan is known for their great sports bar atmosphere, cold drinks, tasty food and Detroit Red Wings' memorabilia. They have some very nice burgers on the menu, too.

The most unique burger selection on the Penalty Box menu was their Blue Line Burger, so we went with this choice. Topped with crumbled blue cheese and crispy onion straws, this is one fine burger. Also weighing in at over one half pound, this burger didn't seem quite as big as the last Burger Battle entry from Sagebrush Cantina. It is still plenty tasty and plenty filling however, and their fries also deserve an honorable mention.

This is entry number four in the FentonSays.com Burger Battle. The featured video tour will give you a flavor for all of the good eats available to residents and visitors of Fenton, Michigan. If you don't agree with our assessment of the various meals to be featured, adding your comments and experiences to the bottom of these articles is greatly appreciated. Pickell Gets The Point on Lake Fenton

Eagle's Point, as some have called it, is a peninsula on the south side of Lake Fenton. This area of the lake has been growing in popularity for people to tie up and enjoy all that Lake Fenton has to offer since the breaking up of "Pig Beach" on the north end of the lake. Genesee County Sheriff Robert J. Pickell and his crew have been patrolling the area this summer to help ensure boater safety and compliance with the local laws and ordinances. FentonSays.com made mention of the law enforcement coverage of Eagle's Point over the 4th of July. We appreciate the comments of our readership base.

And now for your viewing pleasure, video footage of Eagle's Point on Lake Fenton:

Virtual Video Tour "The Eats of Fenton" Burger Battle #03 -- Sagebrush Cantina

Where is a good place to go and get a big tasty burger? At a mexican restaurant, of course! More widely known for their giant, three pound "Super Burritos" and complimentary tortilla chips with flavorful salsa, Sagebrush Cantina on Fenton Road in Fenton, Michigan serves up one mean burger.

The avacado burger was the most unique selection on the menu, and weighing in at over one half pound, this burger is sure to please a hearty appetite ... especially if there was a refill or two on the tortilla chips and salsa. And for a mexican restaurant, they sure do know their way around a crispy french fry! Hamburguesa buena!

Virtual Video Tour "The Eats of Fenton" Burger Battle #02 -- McDonald's

Fenton, like most other towns in America, has a McDonalds. Actually, Fenton has at least three McDonald's stores that come to mind in the Fenton area. Did we really believe that McDonald's could topple the current Burger Battle champion, MoDoggie's Bar & Grill? Nope. But we do think they have a good value proposition going with the $1.00 double cheeseburger.

The other reason we wanted to feature McDonald's early in the Burger Battle is as a point of reference. Nearly everyone has at least seen, if not eaten, one of Ronald's double cheeseburgers. When you see the double cheeseburger in my hand, and then you see other Burger Battle videos, it'll give you a better idea as to the size and quality of the other entrants into FentonSays.com's Fenton Burger Battle.

So sit back, relax and enjoy a virtual snack on FentonSays.com.

Virtual Video Tour "The Eats of Fenton" Burger Battle #01 -- MoDoggie's Bar & Grill

This is entry number one in the FentonSays.com Burger Battle, and also the first segment in the series "The Eats of Fenton." The featured video tour will give you a flavor for all of the good eats available to residents and visitors of Fenton, Michigan. If you don't agree with our assessment of the various meals to be featured, adding your comments and experiences to the bottom of these articles is greatly appreciated. Or head off to the FentonSays discussion forum and weigh in there.

Yes, I was surprised, too. MoDoggies has some awesome food! I always knew their beers were cold and refreshing, and their live bands are super rockin' ... but I totally underestimated the quality of their eats. We selected the MoDoggie's burger because we know this is the one to beat. That's not to say that we may not discover a superior burger in Fenton as we continue on with the FentonSays.com Burger Battle. It could happen. But we wanted to start the series with a very strong entrant.

MoDoggie's has daily $5.00 lunch specials, which occasionally do include their "killer burgers" or even the close cousin, the patty melt. Their burger has a solid texture and a grilled or smokey taste. The buns are fresh and of premium quality. And the french fries ... wow! We'll focus on the burgers, but the fries do deserve an honorable mention. But even if not on special, you are still looking at the $5.00-$7.00 range for a good quality burger.

Good Morning Fenton - Good Morning America

Yesterday morning a crowd gathered in front of The State Bank in downtown Fenton, Michigan. No, this wasn't a rally to protest against the high water rates and the brown lawns. Instead it was the second year that Fenton has had the opportunity to say, "Join us for the Taste of Fenton. Good morning, America!"

That's right! During the week of August 6, 2007 the segment will run locally on "Good Morning America." What a great way to promote The Taste of Fenton coming up just around the corner.

WJRT (Channel 12) was on location at the State Bank at 9:30 AM on August 1st to film this segment. A roving ace reporter from FentonSays.com just so happened to be driving by. Thanks for the photo!

Good Morning Fenton, Michigan!! Good Morning America!!

Peek Inside Cheryl's Flora Cafe in Downtown Fenton, Michigan

You've seen the store on the corner of Leroy and Silver Lake Road and often wondered what's inside. You know the one - with the hand painted flowers brightening up the previously stark white pillars of the closed down gas station. Don't be shy, you can take a two minute peak in this FentonSays.com video.

See the delightful flowers and enchanting gifts. Imagine the aroma of a hot cup of gano coffee. It's ok to stop and smell the flowers in Fenton, Michigan. They have many enchanting gift items at what we thought to be extremely reasonable prices. In addition to the flowers and gifts, they do indeed have a selection of greeting cards. And it is the only place we know about to get gano coffee in the local area. Don't know what gano coffee is? We didn't either. But Cheryl would love to tell you all about it.
